On Monday, 4th April at 7.30am, the Preliminary Extension English class invited their parents to a breakfast where they showcased their writing talents by reading an extract from their tandem stories. These stories were inspired by the popular culture text, Joel and Cat Set the Story Straight by Nick Earls and Rebecca Sparrow. Written in tandem story form about a tandem story project in which Year 11 Extension English students write a tandem story via email that they are not allowed to discuss, this process was mirrored in our classroom, where students were randomly paired and had to email a paragraph to each other over a two week period. Throughout this time, students experienced the writing process from a new and different perspective.
Students have now witnessed first-hand the benefits and challenges of shared authorship. They have had to wrestle with how difficult it can be to lose control of narrative direction; they’ve amazed one another and frustrated one another, been disappointed that their partner hasn’t picked up on a particular narrative thread, or been surprised by a change in voice. They’ve had to deal with technical problems, sick partners, control freaks and working with someone that they don’t know all that well. Then they’ve had to share the editing process, reflect on the experience and analyse their own writing and critique the whole process.
