INFORMATION SKILLS

The NSW Department of Education and Training model of information skills is a way of giving student a scaffold for research and teachers a common language to help students develop the vital skills for seeking and using information. The process is designed to be recursive, that is, students do not have to progress through the process in a linear fashion but can revisit different stages along the journey as necessary. To begin with, however, the student needs to define what the task is.

The full model looks like the diagram on the right.

The questions which a student would ask at each stage would be similar to these:

Defining—What do I really want to find out?

What is my purpose?

Key words?

Why?

What do I need to do?

Locating—Where can I find the information I need?

What do I know?

What do I need to find out?

Sources? Equipment?

Selecting—What information do I really need to use?

What information should I leave out?

Relevance?

Credible?

Recording

Organising—How can I best use this information?

Do I have enough information?

Do I need all the information?

How should I combine my information?

Presenting—How can I present this information?

What will I do with the information?

With whom will I share this information?

Assessing—What did I learn from this?

                Did I fulfil my purpose?

                How did I go?

                Where to from here?
