About Year 9 and 10 Mathematics9M1 hard at work

When students enter Year 9 Mathematics they begin to follow the Stage 5 Mathematics Syllabus. In Mathematics, the Stage 5 Syllabus breaks into 3 "Pathways". A diagram to illustrate how this occurs can be seen on the Mathematics Curriculum Overview page. Students who are studying the Stage 5.3 Pathway will have completed the Stage 5.1 and Stage 5.2 components as well.

It is important to note that the Pathway that a student follows in Years 9 and 10 will play the deciding factor in what course they are prepared for in Years 11 and 12. A student who has followed the 5.2 Pathway will generally be unable to successfully complete the "Mathematics" course for the HSC. Instead they (and students who have followed the 5.1 Pathway) will be better prepared for the "General Mathematics" course.

At the beginning of Year 9 all students begin with the same topics. This allows the faculty time to see how students are performing before making final class (and Pathway) determinations. These class determinations are made towards the end of Term 1.

At the end of Year 10 two separate processes occur regarding student results.

  1. The School awards a Grade to each student based on their overall Mathematical ability compared to the entire Year Group - not just students in their "Pathway". These Grades are based on student performance during their course and are awarded using Course Performance Descriptors.
  2. The School awards each student a mark and grade for the results they have achieved in the specific course they have followed.

Parents wanting more information on the Stage 5 Mathematics Syllabus can find it on the Board of Studies Website.
