About Engineering Studies at MGHS

Sam Convery UNISS Scholarship Holder

Engineering Studies at Maitland Grossmann High School has a fine tradition of outstanding academic success. Higher School Certificate results in the subject are always amongst the highest in the school and the district. Many of our Engineering Students have gone on to study Engineering at TAFE and University levels. Students such as Sam Convery featured in the picture to the right. Sam is currently studying Civil Engineering at Newcastle University and has gained a prestigious UNISS scholarship with Abigroup. In 2009 Sam's younger brother Tom Convery was also successful in gaining a UNISS scholarship. A truly talented family!

Two other students in the 2008 cohort, Matthew Osborne and Micheal Tonon have been successful in achieving Engineering Scholarships with Xstrata worth in excess of $9000.00 per year. Matthew is also currently a Minerals Council Bursary holder and has been since 2007. Tom Fairweather from the 2009 cohort was also a Minerals Council Bursary holder as was Hayden Cole 2010. In 2011 Thomas Myles and Peter Bartolacci were also successful in achieving this scholarship.

The Industrial Arts department has expanded its Engineering Programs in 2008 to include a Year 9 Industrial Technology Engineering class. In 2011 we have two Year 10 and two Year 9 Industrial Technology Engineering classes and have expanded the Technology options in Years 7 & 8 to include engineering topics.

Many of our Junior Engineering programs are underpinned by the use of CATIA 3D graphics software and the F1inSchools initiative.

Benjamin Fraser, Tom Myles, Peter Bartolacci and David Smith Engineering Studies students from Maitland Grossmann High School will be heading to Sydney to participate in The Honeywell Engineering Summer School that gives them the opportunity to see firsthand if they want to pursue a career in engineering. The students will experience different engineering disciplines and will experience behind-the-scenes visits to some of Sydney’s major engineering companies and have the chance to speak with engineers on the job.

The students will visit five metropolitan universities which will give them an insight into the engineering career opportunities available to them. There is an estimated shortfall of up to 30,000 qualified engineers in Australia, and these students are taking major steps to ensure their future in this exciting industry. The summer school has been running for more than a decade and over 80 per cent of the students who attend go on to study engineering. Although other students from the school have been selected for this program this is the first time that four students have been successful.

Maitland Grossmann High school appears to have yet another young Civil Engineer in its ranks. Nicolas Wood an Engineering Studies student at the school recently achieved 98% for his Civil Structures engineering report. Nicolas produced a bridge design using the Westpoint bridge simulation program which was developed by the Westpoint Military College in the United States. He then produced a spaghetti bridge based on his unique design which was tested to destruction and carried nearly 300 times its own weight. His subsequent report is a finalist for the University of Wollongong’s engineering awards,  a competition that students from the school have won during the past two years.
