Factors Affecting Design: Safety

In the Design and technology HSC course you will learn about factors affecting design. You will need to apply your understanding of these factors to the development of your major design project. One of those factors affecting design is safety. This tutorial provides an overview of the current safety legislation in NSW.

This material addresses aspects of the following syllabus outcomes:

H1.1 The student critically analyses the factors affecting design and the development and success of design projects.

WorkCover NSW manages the State's workplace safety, injury management and workers compensation systems.

Their mission is to sustain a working partnership with the NSW community to achieve safe workplaces, effective return to work and security for injured workers.

The Authority administers the:

  • Workers Compensation Act 1987
  • Workplace Injury Management and Workers Compensation Act 1998
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act 2000
  • Factories, Shops and Industries Act 1962
  • Dangerous Goods Act 1975
  • Workers Compensation (Bush Fire, Emergency & Rescue Services) Act 1987
  • and the Regulations and Codes of Practice under those Acts.

WorkCover NSW works with industry, the workforce, and insurers to:

  • promote a culture of safety through public awareness programs, education
    and other community activities
  • improve the performance of the workplace safety, injury management, and workers compensation systems.

New workplace safety laws

New laws are in place to protect workers. The Occupational Health and Safety Act 2000 and Regulation 2001 are written in plain English and aim to improve workplace safety. Select the Law and policy 

Focus on industries

The Workplace Injury Management and Workers Compensation Act 1998 focuses on the management, prevention and administration of workplace injuries. The emphasis is on a safe, timely and durable return to work of injured workers. To find out more select the Workers compensation  Publications
