37 students from a number of Year 8 classes attended the Great Hall at the University of Newcastle for a Build ME a future Day on Wednesday 26th October.  The day was run by the Engineering faculty and was designed to stimulate interest in engineering studies.

The first half of the day revolved around hands on activities designed to bring out creative skills and build skills in teamwork. The activities were quite competitive, between the schools attending, as well as between individual teams of girls and boys. The activities included designing and testing propellers, planes, catapults and buggies and a simulated electricity distribution system. After lunch there was a demonstration by the Engineering faculty robotics team and a laser light show.

The grand finale consisted of a catapult shoot off, where our boys team was just edged into second place (although our video evidence begged to differ!!)

A great day was had by all that attended.

Congratulations to all the Maitland Grossmann High School students who achieved so well at the recent F1inSchools regional finals held at Panthers Newcastle. More than 70 students from six local high schools were involved in the event and they used their skills and imagination to design, build and race mini Formula One cars powered by CO2 gas. The Smoking Aces won the Pro Senior category and had the highest overall score for the event. Endurance Racing also performed very well and are in the running for a wildcard entry in the State Finals next month along with the Smoking Aces.
Industry partners from Thales, Marciano Industries, Bloomfield Group and Varley Group were on hand to give advice to students on how the F1 model racing skills can be put into a real job.
The event was sponsored by the federally funded ME Program. NBN Video Photos

Students from MGHS heard about 15 new mechanical and electrical apprenticeships available next year at Coal & Allied’s three operations, after the Hunter Valley coal producer spoke to local schools last week.
Apprentice Coordinator Don Cant said the company currently hosts more than 40 apprentices with training partner, NovaSkill, and is on the hunt for fresh talent.
“While our apprenticeships are open to anyone interested, we wanted to encourage local young people to apply” Mr Cant said.

“It’s important to us that our local students are aware of our apprenticeships, understand what a career with us entails, and can apply for them if they’re interested.”

Teen Honnery from MGHS said he is interested in undertaking an electrical apprenticeship and is going to apply for one with Coal & Allied. “The information session from Coal & Allied was really useful in supplying specific information about the company but also the diverse opportunities available in the wider mining industry,” Mr Honnery said.
Coal & Allied apprenticeship applications close COB Friday 24 June 2011. For more information about how to apply, contact Don Cant on 0429 124 999.
