Maitland Grossmann High School’s Career Education Program aims to prepare students to manage these transitions and contribute effectively and responsibly to their own and other’s social and economic wellbeing. In order to do this, the school relies on the understanding, support and involvement of parents and employers. The Careers Adviser relies on the support of school staff to implement the Careers Program. The definition of “career” has changed. “Career” no longer refers to particular pathways through work or to an occupational title. “Career” is a sequence and variety of work roles (paid and unpaid) which one undertakes throughout a lifetime. More broadly, ”career” includes life roles, leisure activities, learning and work. According to the Ministerial Council for Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs (1998), Career Education is “The development of knowledge, skills and attitudes through a planned program of learning experiences in education and training settings which will assist students to make informed decisions about their study and/or work options and enable effective participation in working life.” The key elements of Career Education is- Learning about self Learning about the world of work Learning how to make decisions Learning how to handle change(transitions)
